Electrical system equipment built by The Greatest Generation was--like tanks and aircraft and naval ships--dependable and overbuilt. Penrose discusses this, as well as his maritime, motor, and reliability experience, and his thoughts on the evolution from “built-to-last” equipment from that generation through the disposable nature of equipment today.

In this feature-length episode of the Electric Power Reliability Podcast, EPRA president Alan Ross speaks to Jack Nicholas, a giant in the reliability industry and an EPRA Fellow.

Nicholas explains how he became involved with reliability during his service in the Navy, and how his writing career continues to flourish during his semi-retirement. Nicholas is an internationally recognized expert on condition monitoring, and has written and co-authored texts that have defined and shaped the industry from the beginning. He continues to publish books that educate the industry.

Alan Ross, founder and president of EPRA, spoke to Jason Tranter, founder and managing director of Mobius Institute, about the new alliance between the organizations.

In the first part of this series, Tranter explains the background of Mobius Institute, the gap his organization filled at its inception, and how reliability professionals use the tools and resources Mobius provides to build safer and more reliable operations. Chris [Root] joined VELCO as Chief Operating Officer in March 2014. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Network Strategy, a branch of National Grid. He holds a masters in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. He completed the Program for Management Development of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business and has authored, co-authored and presented papers at various utility forums. He and his wife live in Rutland and have three grown children.
